Emma Jeffs

Healthy Weight Gain in Pregnancy

About Dr Jeffs

Dr Emma Jeffs (BSc, PG Dip Diet, MHeal Sc, MB ChB, DCH) is a medical doctor. Emma's Masters thesis, which she completed under the guidance of three specialist obstetricians, considered pregnant women's knowledge of the risks of excess weight and smoking during pregnancy, women's perceptions of their own body size, and also their knowledge of healthy weight gain in pregnancy. This research resulted in the development of an education programme for healthy weight gain in pregnancy at Christchurch Women's Hospital; this intervention has since been adopted nationally by the Ministry of Health.

Emma’s research interests include child health in New Zealand, and specifically, orthopaedic conditions in adolescents, gastroenteritis in children and listeriosis in women and infants. Other research interests include the diagnosis of breast cancer and how this has changed over time, and the management of malignant bowel polyps and their progression to bowel cancer.
